WSSLHA was honored to host a guest speaker meeting event with Sara McCracken! Sara has been a CCC-SLP since 2008 and works with children with autism. In this meeting, Sara gave an awesome presentation on her journey of becoming an SLP and what it is like working as a pediatric Speech Language Pathologist!
First, Sara shared her experience in grad school and how she graduated from Eastern Michigan University! She also talked about her clinical fellowship year and how she spent it at Rivergate Terrance, which is a skilled nursing facility. Her first job was at a school, where she worked with 14-26 year olds. She then moved to a new facility, called The Center for Exceptional Families, where she was responsible for full-day caseloads of patients and where she worked with five interns as well as laryngectomy patients. Sara then shared what working as a school based SLP is like and how that involves a lot of IEP’s, meetings, progress notes, and scheduling. She also explains how the response intervention team at these schools work and how the staff members all work together to ensure the best settings for the students and patients. Sara discusses how she navigated through the pandemic as an SLP and how she won an award for her creativity during that period. She then walked us through how therapy with children is like, and what different strategies she uses with them. She encourages everyone to have patience and reminds us to HAVE FUN!
